Excavator Rental Rates: What to Expect in the Cowichan Valley
Renting an excavator for the first time? You’re not alone — most of our customers are homeowners and hobby farmers tackling their first big project. Here’s a straight breakdown of what excavator rental costs on Vancouver Island so you can budget properly and avoid surprises.
Excavator Sizes and What They’re For
Excavators come in three general sizes, and picking the right one saves you money:
Mini Excavators (1-4 ton)
Best for: Trenching waterlines, digging garden beds, small drainage projects, tight spaces between buildings. These machines fit through standard gates and cause minimal ground disturbance. Perfect for residential yards in Duncan, Ladysmith, and Cobble Hill where space is tight.
Mid-Size Excavators (5-10 ton)
Best for: Foundation digs, septic system installation, larger trenching, moderate land clearing, driveway building. This is the sweet spot for most Cowichan Valley homeowner projects — enough power to move serious dirt without being overkill.
Full-Size Excavators (10+ ton)
Best for: Major land clearing, large foundation work, road building, demolition, commercial site prep. If you’re clearing a forested lot in Lake Cowichan or prepping a building site, this is what you need.
What Affects Your Rental Cost
Several factors determine what you’ll pay:
- Machine size — Bigger machines cost more per day, but they also do the work faster. A full-size excavator might cost twice as much per day as a mini, but finish a land clearing job in 2 days instead of 5.
- Rental duration — Daily rates are highest per-day. Weekly and monthly rates offer significant discounts. If your project will take more than 3-4 days, a weekly rate almost always makes sense.
- Delivery — Getting the machine to your site adds cost, especially for larger excavators that need a lowbed trailer. Closer to our Cowichan Valley base = lower delivery cost.
- Attachments — Standard bucket is included. Specialty attachments (breaker, auger, thumb, grading bucket) may be extra.
- Fuel — Most rentals require you to return the machine with the same fuel level. Budget for diesel — excavators use roughly 2-5 gallons per hour depending on size and workload.
Tips for First-Time Excavator Renters
1. Know your project before you call. Brad will ask what you’re digging, how deep, what type of soil, and how much material needs moving. The more detail you give, the better he can match you with the right machine.
2. Check your site access. How will the excavator get to where it needs to work? Measure gate widths, check for overhead wires, and look for soft ground that might not support a heavy machine. Mini excavators fit through a standard 4-foot gate; mid-size machines need 6-8 feet.
3. Call BC One Call (1-800-474-6886) before you dig. This is free and legally required. They’ll mark underground utilities so you don’t hit a gas line or water main. Do this at least 3 business days before your rental starts.
4. Plan for spoil disposal. Where is the dirt going? If you’re digging a foundation, you’ll have a pile of soil that needs to go somewhere. Rent a dump trailer from us to haul it, or plan a spot on your property to spread it.
5. Budget for more time than you think. First-time operators are slower — that’s normal. If you think a job will take one day, rent for two. You’ll be less stressed and the work will be better. Weekly rates make this easy.
